How to record a Discord call

Discord has no record button. Here are the three ways people record calls, and which one fits what you need.

A bot records from inside the call, so it works for everyone, on any device. Software on your own computer records only what you hear. Three ways to record

Each one gets you something different: notes, editable audio, or a quick copy for yourself.

1. Add DiscMeet (any device)

Add DiscMeet to your server, join the voice channel and run /discmeet start. It records everyone, whatever device they joined from. When you stop, it posts a speaker-labeled transcript and notes to a thread, and on every paid plan the full call as an MP3.

2. OBS Studio on your computer

OBS is free. Add a desktop audio capture for the call and a microphone capture for your own voice, then press Start Recording. You get one audio or video file of what your computer heard, and you have to stay in the call the whole time.

3. Your phone's screen recorder

iPhone and Android can screen record, but many phones mute call audio while recording, so test it before an important call. If you're on mobile, a bot is the reliable option.

Recording Discord calls: common questions

Is it legal to record a Discord call?

It depends on where you and the other people are: some places require everyone's consent. The safe rule is to tell everyone at the start of the call. DiscMeet posts a message when it starts recording, and its consent opt-in means only people who agree are recorded.

Can I record a Discord call on my phone?

Yes, with a bot. It records from inside Discord, so it works whether people joined from a phone, tablet or computer. Phone screen recorders often mute call audio.

Does Discord tell people they're being recorded?

Discord itself doesn't, because it doesn't record. A recording bot shows up in the voice channel like any other member, and DiscMeet also posts a recording message in the channel.

How long can a recording be?

With DiscMeet, 1 hour per recording on the free trial, 6 hours on Pro, 8 on Pro+ and 12 on Studio. With OBS, as long as your disk has space.

Can I get the audio file from DiscMeet?

Yes, on every paid plan. Turn on MP3 recording in the dashboard and the full audio of each call is posted in Discord next to the notes. If you need a separate file per speaker to edit, use Craig.

Can I transcribe a recording I already have?

Yes. Post the audio file in a Discord channel, right-click it (or long-press on mobile), open Apps and choose Transcribe audio. DiscMeet replies with the transcript.
